curses

2019 — 2022

this work has been widely screened and exhibited and is held in the collection of vtape (canada). in a custom-made garment dyed in blue — the indigo of their ancestors / سلفي نيلي / آباؤ اجداد نیل / mababu indigo — the artist performs a ritual of release, confronting the weight of inherited “curses” and invoking resistance against systems of harm. through gesture and embodiment, the performance summons healing forces to unmake instruments of violence, tanks, drones, and currency, reconfiguring them as sites of transformation. the work proposes healing not as an endpoint but as a continuous, cyclical process through which past and future remain in dynamic relation.

indigo is an ancestor as much as the plant connects my ancestors and is written in the three langauges of swahili, arabic and urdu. this blue color garment features images from my family and textile details including cyanotype, custom embrodiery and ribbons.
