workshops

knowledge sharing is an inherent act of care. these standalone workshops and workshop series create intentional spaces of connection, grounded in a praxis of non-hierarchical learning, open-source tools, and community-oriented troubleshooting. here, thinking through ideas and solving problems becomes a collective practice shared by all. the workshop environment centers accessibility and multi-modal learning, inviting imagination to unfold at a gentle pace—through slow sips, spacious curiosity, and collaborative exploration. participants leave not only with new technical skills, but with expanded creative pathways and a renewed sense of possibility. each workshop becomes a joyful site of discovery—where you can experiment freely, make something unexpected, and feel supported at every step. you’ll join a community of makers, thinkers, and dreamers who continue sharing insights, resources, and inspiration long after the workshop ends, often collaborating on new projects and forming enduring creative relationships.

courses

Hiba_Ali_Digital_imaging

undergraduate art and technology program courses:

artd 360 digital imaging: fall 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024, winter 2022, 2023, 2024, spring 2021, 2022, 2024

with the adobe photoshop application, we learn about the digital image as it relates to visual storytelling and worldbuilding, a term that refers to the ways we use introductory and collage techniques to create digital “portals.” worldbuilding includes considering space, place, time and location. creating a digital portal refers to creating 3d space out of 2d plane and is integral to the way computer and related technology transport us. themes such as remediation, memes, worldbuilding, diptych, triptych and screen culture are explored.

artd 410/ 510 art of surveillance: winter 2023, spring 2021, 2022, 2024

with new art city, a digital exhibition platform, we explore the ways in which data collection practices and privacy abuses from both the government and private sector have a greater negative impact on marginalized communities compared to other groups. we create code and design 3d digital spaces through a series of assignments and projects. we read, discuss, and incorporate several critical texts that illuminate the ways in which the circulation of data occurs. we critically examine the role of surveillance through digital art and the humanities.

artd 251 time-based digital arts: fall 2020 + lab: spring 2023

this course consists of weekly lectures that focus on specific concepts, paired with labs that focus on techniques and meet twice a week. through a series of assignments and projects we learn concepts of sequence, narration, scoring, and motion. using adobe premiere, we explore the notion of time as a medium in relation to contemporary art. we learn how to use adobe premier with audition and after effects to create video projects with complex editing techniques.

Hiba_Ali_Experimental_Video_Art

artd 415/ 515 video art: experimental film: fall 2024, winter 2023

primarily focusing on adobe after effects with new art city and blender, we make expanded cinema, 360 cinema, adobe after effects’ motion tracking, and green screen to create muti-level narratives. studying the experimental nature of video art, we screen contemporary digital artists to build a self-reflexive palette of video art and expanded virtual worlds.

college of design course:

artd 410/510 issues and practices cyberfeminism: fall 2024

this course surveys cyberfeminism through somatic projects that activate memory, archive, sound, and sight. combining both studio and seminar approaches, students explore cyberfeminismindex.com and develop artworks in response to somatic and archival practices. focused on their advanced artist practice, students will learn how to deepen their research and extend their practice through personal resource-development and communal feedback.

graduate course:

hiba_ali_IP_Cyberfeminism

artd 610 issues and practices cyberfeminism: fall 2023

hc444h/421h: data as metamorphosis: investigating with art in issues of gender, labor and technology: winter 2022

in this course, we examine the role of technology and labor as they intersect with art. for this course, i was awarded the williams instructional fellowship to create a series of artist lectures by queer and bipoc artists. through creative workshops, we learn, discuss, and make digital art with open source (and free to use) technologies, such as twine, youtube 360 (vr) engine, and unity video game engine. we conduct readings and learn about artwork that helps us imagine a world beyond extractive methodologies toward an ethics of care and mutual support.

inspired by artworks such as elisa giardina papa, technologies of care, 2016, and tabita rezaire, deep down tidal (2017) and books such as precarity lab, technoprecarious (2020) and virginia eubanks, automating inequality: how high-tech tools profile, police, and punish the poor (2018) and aided by guest lecturers, thoughtful communal feedback, workshops and interactive in-person and online learning exercises, we home in on our own creative projects and approaches.
